Comparing Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson The lives of Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson have many similarities and differences. Here, we will focus on the similarities in their lives in order to bring to attention a correlation between Whitmans poem I Saw in Louisiana a Live-oak Growing and Dickinsons poem # 1510. Both poets wrote during the time of Romanticism, even though Whitman was Dickinsons senior by some eleven years. This however did not influence the way the writing styles of many of their poems coincided. Loneliness was an important characteristic of both poets lives during the writing years. Living in a life of social separation much of the time, he still managed to succeed not only with his writing, but also in life itself. However, in line five Whitman goes on to say that he wonders how the tree could grow such joy ous leaves while being alone. He himself says that he could not survive if put in the same situation. Whitman did however lead a joyous and happy life in many peoples opinion, even though he did not enjoy the social life many other had during his lifetime. His own opinion of himself not being lonely may be frayed in order to spare the image he proposes to the public in his writings. The next few lines are interesting because of the way they could possible spell out Whitmans life. In the poem, he breaks of a twig, wraps some moss around it, and takes it to he room and places it in plain view. This may parallel his life by way of his memory. The twig may represent pieces of his memory that were enjoyable to him. He then takes the twig and places it in his room signifying that he wants to be able to constantly see those fond memories. Again Whitman replies by saying he did not do this to remind him of his friends, but in reality he may have just said this to help keep a good r eport with his readers about his lifestyle. When we first come to the setting of his new room the usage of high contrast lighting in his quarters followed by low lighting in the old and decaying backyard is important. It is ju st so because it sets up the tone for just how this house is going to be to live in and how that directly will reflect on the characters who live in it. It also ties in to exactly what the theme tries to depict about the larger picture: a dark and sullen image of the life in general. When Joe first looks outside of his room one of the first things he sees is shown through an eyeline match to a close shot of some scurrying rats. This here more than likely foreshadows the death coming later in the film, which is one of the three times it does this in the scene. The next time is the burial of the monkey, which also shows a correlation to him replacing it in Normas life, just as Norma was replaced in the industry when her time was up. The third time death is used also goes hand in hand with another appearance of the dream motif. As soon as the monkeys burial is done there is a fade out to Joe having this dream with a voice over of him describing it. The description is only important because he envisions a dancing monkey. Not surprisingly, there’s a popular thought among Jordan fans who say there’ll never be another Michael Jordan. However, there are new NBA rookies out there who might match the outstanding mark Jordan made in basketball history. Then, came Chris Bosh of Toronto Raptors. Chris Bosh was born March 4, 1984 and was number 4 in the NBA draft pick in 2003. A power forward, he’s a great inside and outside player. Few are blessed with his athletic prowess as he plays with a good amount of aggressiveness, but doesn’t get out of control or lose his composure easily. His long frame and amazing fluidity, he runs the floor exceptionally well. Bosh doesn’t have the perimeter skills of Kevin Garnett, namely shooting, but appears to like playing in the post more so than Jordan and could end up filling out into more of a dominating post player. Has great ball handling skills and really can pass the ball. He has some developed post moves and an advanced offensive game for a 21 year old. He can even step out to three point land and hit a few long range shots. Most sports critics say, he understands the game well, doesn’t make unnecessary moves, uses the drop step and jumps hook effectively. Because of his long arms, timing, and explosiveness, he is an excellent shot blocker. The team even goes to him to bring the ball up the court at times as a point forward. He is now dubbed as â€Å"Air Canada† comparable to Michael Jordan’s â€Å"Air Jordan† tag (Forrest, 2005). But, he’s more famous to the title as â€Å"The Future†. When the Raptors claimed the NBA title against the Chicago earlier this year, Bosh is getting a step closer in his path to equal Michael Jordan’s fabulous feats.
